The power of the black vote was evident in the 1868 Presidential election. 450,000 blacks voted for Grant: the Democratic candidate lost by 300,000. Blacks gave Grant the decisive edge.

Under President Ulysses S. Grant’s administration Reconstruction flourished. New England school teachers moved south and opened schools for black children with government funding. Morehouse College, Fisk and Howard Universities were born. The Freedman’s Bureau spent five million dollars on educating blacks.

Southern backlash unleashed its fangs with a vengeance.

Terrorist groups like the Ku Klux Klan resorted to lynching, tar-and feathering, whipping, threats, and burning homes.
